Add Vipps to your app — payments and login Norwegians actually use

If you sell to Norwegian customers, they expect Vipps at checkout — and increasingly expect to log in with it too. Meridianstacks is a team of senior engineers, anchored by hubs in Africa's three tech capitals, that handles Vipps integration for your app: ePayment and checkout, recurring agreements and Vipps Login, implemented against Vipps MobilePay's official APIs — into the web or mobile app you already have, or built into a new product from day one. Your matched hub is Johannesburg (UTC+2) — the same clock as Oslo in summer and never more than an hour out. You get a fixed price in NOK before work starts, you pay against milestones — for delivered, accepted work — and you own all the code.

In short

To integrate Vipps in Norway you need a merchant agreement with Vipps MobilePay (in your company's name — we guide you through it), API keys, a build against their test environment, and correct webhook and capture handling in production. Meridianstacks does the entire technical side: a single Vipps payment or login integration is NOK 70,000–135,000 on our Focused tier, payments + login + recurring agreements is NOK 135,000–270,000 on our Standard tier, and a product built around Vipps is NOK 245,000–475,000 on our Full tier — fixed price in NOK, milestone billing, GDPR/EEA compliant, and you own all the code.

What the integration involves

The four things every Vipps integration gets right — or regrets

A Vipps integration is not a plugin you switch on. It is a payment system woven into your order flow, and the difference between a solid one and a fragile one shows up on day one of real traffic. This is the work.

  • Merchant agreement — you sign up with Vipps MobilePay directly, so settlement and the customer relationship are yours. We tell you which API products to request and walk you through the portal.
  • API keys & environments — client credentials, subscription keys and your merchant serial number, stored and rotated properly, never hard-coded.
  • Test environment first — every flow rehearsed end-to-end in Vipps MobilePay's merchant test environment before production keys go anywhere near your app.
  • Webhooks & capture flows — Vipps payments follow a reserve-then-capture model. We implement idempotent webhook handling for authorised, captured, cancelled and refunded events, capture at the right moment for your business (at dispatch, at booking confirmation, at check-in), and reconciliation so your books match your settlement.
Payments, login, or both

Vipps ePayment / Checkout puts the payment method Norwegians reach for first into your checkout — on web and in mobile apps, one-off or recurring.

Vipps Login is OpenID Connect: customers authenticate with the Vipps app and you receive a verified name, phone number and email — no passwords to store, far less sign-up drop-off, far fewer fake accounts.

Most clients start with one and add the other once they see the numbers. We build both against the same user and order models, so adding the second is an extension, not a rebuild.

Use cases

Where Vipps integration pays for itself

Bookings with deposits

Clinics, salons, guides and venues taking a deposit at booking. Vipps reserve-then-capture fits perfectly: reserve at booking, capture at confirmation or arrival, release automatically on a valid cancellation.

Club & gym memberships

Recurring agreements the member approves once in the Vipps app, then automatic monthly charges — with retries, pause and cancellation flows handled properly, and the member able to see the agreement in their own app.

Ecommerce checkout

Vipps as the primary payment method in a custom storefront, with cards as fallback behind the same checkout — one order flow, one refund path, one reconciliation.

Subscriptions & SaaS

Norwegian-market SaaS or content products billed through Vipps recurring agreements, with plan changes, proration logic and dunning built into your billing engine rather than bolted on.

Passwordless sign-up

Vipps Login as the front door of your product — verified Norwegian users in two taps, real names and phone numbers instead of throwaway emails, and no password-reset support queue.

New products built around Vipps

A marketplace, booking platform or member app designed from day one around Vipps payments and login — the Full tier, where the integration is the architecture, not an afterthought.

Companion note: BankID

Vipps Login verifies who is holding the phone. BankID proves who they are. For flows that need legally strong identification in Norway — financial onboarding, signing, age- or identity-critical steps — BankID is the established eID, and it pairs naturally with Vipps Login: Vipps for everyday sign-in, BankID as a step-up when the stakes rise. We integrate BankID through its OpenID Connect ecosystem against the same user model as your Vipps Login, so customers get one coherent identity, not two parallel accounts. If your product needs it, we scope it in the same engagement.

What we need from you

Three inputs. We handle the rest.

  • Codebase & staging access — the repo and a staging environment for the app getting the integration (or a green light to build the new one).
  • A decision-maker — one contact who can approve the payment and login flows and make a few test payments with a real Vipps app.
  • Your merchant agreement — signed with Vipps MobilePay in your company's name. Don't have one? We guide you through the application and tell you exactly which products to request.
Honest scope note

The merchant agreement, its terms and Vipps MobilePay's own fees sit between you and Vipps MobilePay — we don't resell, mark up or sit in the middle of that relationship, and we think you should be wary of anyone who does. Our engagement is the engineering: everything from API keys to a reconciled production integration, quoted as a fixed price in NOK and billed by milestone.

Timeline

From scoping call to live Vipps payments in 3–6 weeks

1. Scope & fixed quote

A 30-minute call to map your checkout, user flows and which Vipps products you need. You get a fixed price in NOK, a timeline and your senior engineers. Week 0.

2. Merchant agreement & keys

We guide your Vipps MobilePay application (or plug into your existing agreement), request the right API products and set up secure key handling. Runs in parallel with the build. Weeks 1–2.

3. Build in the test environment

Payment and login flows implemented end-to-end against the merchant test environment — including failure paths, timeouts and cancellations, not just the happy path. Weeks 1–3.

4. Webhooks, capture & reconciliation

Idempotent webhook handling, the capture policy that fits your business, refunds, and reporting that matches your settlement. Weeks 2–4.

5. Production go-live

Production keys, controlled live test payments, monitoring and alerts, then launch. Weeks 4–6 on the Focused tier; longer tiers phase payments live first, then login and recurring.

6. Support & grow

You own the code and repos. We can stay on a light monthly retainer to add card fallback, subscriptions or BankID step-up as you grow.

GDPR posture

Built for the EEA from the first commit

Payments and login touch personal data by definition, so the compliance posture is part of the engineering, not a memo afterwards.

  • Your app never touches card or bank details — payment credentials and authentication stay inside Vipps MobilePay's regulated infrastructure.
  • Data minimisation — your system stores order references, agreement IDs and only the profile fields you actually use; nothing hoarded "just in case".
  • EEA hosting by default — with a Data Processing Agreement and Standard Contractual Clauses for any transfer outside the EEA.
  • Consent & transparency — Vipps Login scopes requested explicitly, privacy text written so a customer can actually understand what you receive.
You own it all

Repositories are client-controlled from day one and the contract assigns all source code and IP to you in full. If we part ways, you keep a working, documented integration — not a dependency on us.

Questions & answers

Integrating Vipps into your app — FAQ

How much does Vipps integration cost?
A single Vipps integration — ePayment at checkout or Vipps Login, added to your existing app — is NOK 70,000–135,000 on our Focused tier. Payments, login and recurring agreements delivered as one engagement is NOK 135,000–270,000 on our Standard tier. A new product built around Vipps from day one is NOK 245,000–475,000 on our Full tier. Every engagement is quoted as a fixed price in NOK before work starts, ex VAT, and you pay against agreed milestones — for delivered, accepted work. Vipps MobilePay's own merchant fees are separate and paid directly to them under your merchant agreement.
Do we need our own Vipps merchant agreement?
Yes. Vipps MobilePay contracts directly with the merchant, so the sales agreement, merchant serial number and settlement are in your company's name — which is how it should be, because the money and the customer relationship stay yours. We guide you through the application on the Vipps MobilePay portal, tell you exactly which API products to request, and handle everything technical from the moment your keys exist.
How long does Vipps integration take?
A focused integration — Vipps ePayment at checkout or Vipps Login into an existing app — typically takes 3–6 weeks including testing and go-live. A standard engagement covering payments, login and recurring agreements runs 6–10 weeks. A full product built around Vipps runs 9–14 weeks. We start the merchant agreement and test-environment work early so Vipps MobilePay's own steps never block your launch.
Can you also add card payments as fallback?
Yes, and for most businesses you should. Vipps is the payment method Norwegian customers reach for first, but tourists, corporate purchases and some customers still pay by card. We typically pair Vipps with Stripe or another card provider behind a single checkout, so every order lands in the same order flow, reconciliation and refund logic regardless of how it was paid.
Can you add Vipps to an app another team built?
Yes — much of our Vipps work is exactly that: an existing web or mobile app that now needs Vipps at checkout or Vipps Login. We review the codebase first, integrate against your existing order and user models, and add webhook handling and reconciliation without rewriting what already works. If the codebase needs deeper repair first, we tell you honestly and quote that separately.
Does Vipps support subscriptions and recurring payments?
Yes. Vipps MobilePay provides a recurring payments API built on agreements: the customer approves an agreement once in the Vipps app, and you then charge against it on your schedule — monthly memberships, subscriptions or instalments. We implement the agreement lifecycle, charging, retries and cancellation flows, and the customer can see and manage the agreement in their own Vipps app.
Can we use Vipps Login instead of passwords?
Yes. Vipps Login is an OpenID Connect service: the customer authenticates with the Vipps app and your application receives a verified identity — typically name, phone number and email — without you storing passwords at all. It removes sign-up friction for Norwegian users and sharply cuts fake accounts. Where you need stronger identity assurance, BankID is the natural companion step, and we build both against the same user model.
What do you need from us to start?
Three things: access to your codebase and a staging environment, a contact who can approve flows and test payments, and your Vipps MobilePay merchant agreement — or the go-ahead for us to guide you through applying for one. From there we handle API keys, the merchant test environment, webhooks and go-live checks ourselves, and demo working software to you at each milestone.
Is a Vipps integration GDPR-compliant?
We build it to be. Vipps MobilePay handles payment credentials and authentication inside its own regulated infrastructure, so your app never touches card or bank details. We apply data minimisation to what your system stores — order references, agreement IDs and only the profile fields you actually need — host in EEA regions by default, and sign a Data Processing Agreement with Standard Contractual Clauses for any transfer outside the EEA.
Where are your engineers based?
Our engineering is anchored by hubs in Africa's three tech capitals — Lagos (UTC+1), Johannesburg (UTC+2) and Nairobi (UTC+3) — with some engineers working from other cities on the same clocks. That span means we staff your project from the hub that matches your day: Lagos runs 0–1 hour from London and Dublin, Johannesburg mirrors Central and Northern Europe, and Nairobi sits one hour from Dubai. English is an official language in all three countries.
